If I turn off my printer and then back on Windows will try to install new hardware and then fail, putting a yellow question mark on the device under the profile manager. The same goes for my external USB hard drive if I disconnect it. Even if both were working before they won't work when plugged back in or turned back on. Sometimes they won't work after the computer is restarted and I have to plug them in over and over trying different USB ports until Windows figures out which driver to use.

When I try a different USB port it recognizes the same device sometimes as a specific name such as 'TUSB6250 Boot Device' and sometimes as a generic device such as 'USB Mass Storage Device'. Regardless it seems to be a toss up as to whether it will be able to utilize the device.

If I right-click the item in question and click 'Update Driver' and point it to the latest valid manufacturer supplied driver it gives me the message 'The wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed.' This happens regardless of the device in question. If I plug either the printer or the hard drive into an external USB hub instead of directly into the USB ports on the motherboard it frequently loads it as 'Unknown Device' which of course doesn't work. I am absolutely reaching my wits end with the randomness of this. I never know at any given moment whether I will be able to print or even access a hard drive I plug in. It even does this sometimes with my Logitech USB mouse and Microsoft USB keyboard. Can someone please help me resolve this?

This computer is running Windows XP SP2 with all that latest updates. I began experiencing these same problems after doing a firmware update on my iPod, except, Windows XP would never recognize the device I plugged in. Have you tried removing the 'unknown devices' and having Windows search for them on boot? It also sounds like you've been switching USB devices in different ports, are there faulty ones you can identify?
